Visiting Poet by Daphne

On February 4th, we had a surprise visitor to our classes as part of our poetry unit. Ms. Alicia Stallings is a famous poet who has won many awards. We are very lucky because she is Jason’s mom and she also came and talked to us in the 4th grade about poetry.

Ms. Stallings began by reading us poems (The Jabberwocky, Fire and Ice) and we talked about made up words, rhyme and the mood of a poem; we learned that poems can have a cool or warm mood.

Then Ms. Stallings talked to us about the pantoum, a type of poem with a pattern of repetitive lines. She read pantoums to us, like Rain Again and Zero at the Bone. Each class worked together to write its own pantoum and some students wrote their own as well. Our class wrote a pantoum together with a cool mood which started out very scary but ended up being very funny!

Lastly, students read out loud poems they had written in class during the poetry unit and Ms. Stallings praised us and offered us constructive criticism.

I think we all enjoyed Ms. Stallings’ visit very much and appreciate the fact that she took some time to come and talk to us about writing poetry. I hope she can come again next year!

Fear

by Ms. Maratou’s class

You’re not scared, right?

It shivers down my back,

Souls in the darkness die

Have you ever seen a monster like this?

It shivers down my spine,

The head fell down after the body.

Have you ever seen a monster like this?

Those staring eyes moving,

The head fell down after the body.

A half shaded face,

Those staring eyes moving,

He knocks at the door at night.

A half shaded face,

I can see fear in its eyes.

He knocks at the door at night,

A purple bunny rabbit.

I can see fear in its eyes.

The forest stayed silent, too silent.

A purple bunny rabbit,

Sealed your doom tonight.

The forest stayed silent, too silent,

Until- scream, scream,

Sealed your doom tonight,

In the middle of the night.

Until scream, scream,

Trembling from fear,

In the middle of the night

I have no idea.

Trembling from fear,

Souls in the darkness die.

I have no idea,

You’re not scared, right?

Survivor

by Ms. Kynigou’s  class

Titanic, Titanic,

Bubbling, bubbling under water,

It’s colorful under there, it’s beautiful.

What’s that light?

Bubbling, bubbling under water,

The waves are huge,

What’s that light?

Under the sea is a real mystery.

The waves are huge,

What are those boats doing?

Under the sea is a real mystery.

Aqua blue, raging red.

What are those boats doing?

The endless sea boils,

Aqua blue, raging red,

Disappearing into infinity.

The endless sea boils,

The sound of crashing,

Disappearing into infinity,

And never coming back.

The sound of crashing,

As I fall down to the ocean bottom,

And never coming back,

“What is it, what is it?” people ask.

As I fall down to the ocean bottom,

A magical coral rainbow world,

“What is it, what is it?” people ask,

Dolphins passing by.

A magical coral rainbow world,

The Titanic is dead,

Dolphins passing by,

It sank where no-one can see.

The Titanic is dead,

Where have I been?

It sank where no-one can see.

I will have to travel my way up.

Where have I been?

It’s colorful under there, it’s beautiful.

I will have to travel my way up.

Titanic, Titanic.

Those poems you wrote were really good. My favorite one was Ms. Maratou’s class poem, because it had THE PURPLE BUNNY RABBIT.

  3. Dear Asimina,
Thanks for commenting! It was hard to remember everything and it took me some time to write the report but it was fun! Ms. Maratou put up the class pantoums and photos! I also hope Ms. Stallings comes again next year!
